Ryan Schoon: Freelance Writer

Welcome to my personal page!

I plan on using this website to post my thoughts on life, gaming, and freelancing in the business. I have been writing since I was a child and designing my own table top games since I was just a lad. At that age, I never even thought it was something you could do for a career. I remember the first time I ever played an RPG. It was 1995 and I was 10 years old. For some reason, my library carried a copy of the original Call of Cthulhu table top role-playing game. I remember checking it out from the library, taking it home with me, and not comprehending a single thing about it. I didn’t have access to a copy machine back then, so my friend, my sister, and I hand wrote out our character sheets. Let’s just say the mechanics and the subject matter were way too over my head at that point. In 1996, West End games released a revised 2nd edition of their popular D6 Star Wars RPG. I was still young, but the mechanics were easier and the subject matter was close to my heart. We had a great time playing that game, even though at the age of 11 I couldn’t come close to understanding the complexity of the game we were playing. Through the years, and through many, many RPGs (too many to name!) I have grown into an intense appreciation for the medium.

I have found my passion in writing for tabletop role-playing a board games. I love being absorbed into a game’s setting which is brought to life through flavor text and rich descriptions. I found a talent for world building. For traveling back in time to the origins of the game and understanding how it came to be the setting in which the game is played. I like filling those worlds with interesting NPCs and great historical moments. Writing and designing games is a high calling, and I’m happy to answer that call.
