The Creation of Edara

Ancient Edaran legend tells a story of Edara’s creation that is steeped in mythos. According to the legend, five great immortal beings, called Primarchs, were formed from the very essence of Edara itself by the Creator. Each Primarch was given a gift: an aspect of Edara’s Aura that they could control as their own.  By manipulating the Aura, each Primarch gained control over a different element. They used these elements to shape the world.

Ignis, the Primarch of the Red Band harnessed the power of Fire and used it forge the world and its mountains. With a mighty hammer he brought shape to the terrain.
Sylva, the Primarch of the Green Band was granted the element of Nature, which she used to summon Arborvitae, the Tree of Life, and grow the forests of Edara from its boughs and fill them with living creatures.
Auralius, the Primarch of the Blue Band, utilized the endless powers of Water to create the Rivers and Oceans and bend them to his liking.
Angelus, the Primarch of the White Band, was handed the power of Light and tasked to balance the Cycle of Life and Death. It was the his job to protect those whose time was not at it’s end.
Mortis, the Primarch of the Black Band, delves into the growing powers of Darkness to counter Angelus and guide souls to their afterlife in mythical Black Realm of Abyssum.

After shaping the world to their whims the Primarchs vanished without a trace.  Loose collections of mortals had gathered together to learn the Primarch’s teachings. They Banded together under that Primarch’s lead and tattooed designs of their Band’s color onto their faces.  When the Primarchs vanished, these teachings were all that remained of their existence. Skeptics would say this was not proof enough.  These teachings were then passed down from generation to generation and the tradition of Banding is still followed to this day.

A Climate of War

With the Primarchs absent the Mortal Races were left to fend for themselves. They began to separate from each other and become distant. Each Race claimed their stake in a realm, battles were fought, and eventually they settled into their lands, hardly venturing outside their borders. This was especially so with the Human race. Their growing feudal system spurred them to stake out an empire for themselves and closely guard its borders. As the years turned into ages, and thousands of cycles had passed, the Primarchs were mostly forgotten. Their existence was explained away as myth and only the sacred bonds of the Bands were left to remind people that they were once watched over by beings infinitely more powerful than themselves.  There are some who still believe they are being watched over and they practice their Band rituals with a religious fervor. But the number of true believers was dwindling, even within the White and Black Bands, which had always been the most theological.

Those who expected the Primarchs to return at any given moment were left with crushing disappointment. The religious leaders of the White Band began to pour over the Book of Angels, looking for any reason for this abandonment. When the Archons -legendary beings that were believed to be the physical manifestation of the Primarch’s power-  began to appear, everything changed. The Archons had supposedly vanished when the Primarchs did. It quickly became clear that there were two opposing Archon sects. The White Archons were dubbed “Angels” and the Black, “Demons,” by the Mortals. The Religious leaders of the time took this battle as a sign. They concluded that Angelus and Mortis were at war with each other and the the rest of the Primarchs had fled to avoid the conflict. This growing conviction caused a fissure to split between the White and Black Bands. A poisonous cloud of doubt and paranoia began to choke the land. The borders between Realms, strenuous at the best of times, were now locked down for good. Throughout each Realm, the Black and White Bands continued to terrorize each other, sometimes leading to all out warfare. The conflict, colloquially known as “The Primarch’s War,” raged for centuries. Generation after generation of mortals birthed and died knowing nothing but this conflict. The Angels and Demons fought alongside the mortals in an attempt to destroy each other and it appeared that they would surely succeed. The world was crippled by this conflict, and Edara entered into a dark age.

The Steampunk Renaissance

Despite the escalating war, a counter movement was growing within Edara’s citizens. A group of White Band humans, calling themselves the Diplomats, sought refuge within an Elvish tribe that lived near their border. The two groups sat down to discuss and end to the war. This is most commonly considered the birth of the Renaissance Movement within Edara. The Diplomats spoke of peace and hope. They encouraged art, music, and a belief in a life without war.  The Human generals within the Black and White Bands saw the end coming, but felt it was their duty to continue the fight that was passed down to them. The two sides mustered their forces, bringing together sects from all the Mortal Races to bolster their numbers. The other Bands were forced to either pick sides or get caught in the midst of a heated battle between the Black and White Band. With allies on either side and Angels and Demons within their ranks, the two Bands collided in what would be their final battle. In the midst of the chaos, the ground erupted beneath the surface of Edara, causing a massive explosion and an earthquake that rocked the entire plain. The battle ended immediately. The entire battlefield was obliterated. Some of the wounded survivors would later claim to have seen the figures of Angelus and Mortis fighting within the smoke that consumed the battlefield. When the haze cleared, the Archons were no where to be seen and the armies of the Black and White Bands were decimated.

Hidden within the newly exposed ground was a new element, chalky and black, which created a powerful blast of steam when burned. This was the birth of Steam Technology.  Inventors and Engineers went to work post haste to harness that discovery. They created ways to contain and transport it, and use it as a source of power. They built machines powered by steam and  Gadgets to make life easier. The vision of the future promised by the Diplomats was suddenly within reach.
Using new steam-powered inventions and machinery  roadways were built to connect cities that had never been connected. The first Cross-Realm railroad was completed and steam powered Zeppelins began to roam the skies. Fifty years after the discovery of the Element, the world is smaller than it once was. The Bands have signed the “Treatise of Peace” and the borders between Realms are beginning to open for the first time in memory. This has allowed for an exchange of ideas and cultures that had long since been forgotten. Now the focus is on the inventors, artists, and musicians who are slowly removing the blanket of fear from Edara. The Renaissance has come to Edara, and the world is ready to explore.
